From Our Maine Conference

Blest be the tie that binds
Our hearts in Christian love;
The fellowship of kindred minds
Is like to that above. (John Fawcett)
Fall is in the air. I cleared a couple of hours this weekend to drive out to an apple orchard. My goals were extremely low. I want to see fall leaves, buy some apples, drink some cider, and eat some donuts. I am glad to report that I accomplished these goals and had a great sense of joy in accomplishing my mission. Fall means so many things to me, it is without a doubt my favorite time of year. I am grateful that the Annual Meeting of the Maine Conference falls into my Fall plans.
I quoted the first verse of Blest Be the Tie that Binds above because when we come together in wider ways I see and feel such deep bonds of our covenant. To that end, I am looking forward to our annual gathering at Pilgrim Lodge. It is a great opportunity to come together and “Be the Church” in one of its broadest senses. Like my sojourn to the apple orchard, I have some basic goals for this time together. I am in search of handshakes, hugs, and helloes. These things really gather into one basic need, to be present with those being present.
Last year’s Annual Meeting was a blur for me. I was new and hardly knew anyone. In the year that has happened since, I have a much better grasp of my job and who you are as a conference. I thrive on the opportunity to make and celebrate connections. I want to shake hands and thank you for all the ways you celebrate the church in our time. I have been in some deep places of need and conversation this year and want to be able to offer you a hug if you need one. I want to celebrate new calls, old friends, and fresh challenges. But more than that if we have not met or I have not visited your church yet, let’s start with a hello.
If you have not signed up for the Annual Meeting yet there is still time. You will find the signup link on the Midweek Newsletter. Beyond my excitement of being with you all there is much to love. Pilgrim lodge is largely heated by fireplaces. Crackling embers sing as fragrant smoke perfumes the air. The lake front lets light glisten on ripples as birds sing and loons’ call. There is a great stillness to be among the woods in communion with others. I heard that the cookies and the banana bread recipes are already pulled out and ready. For the more practical of us, there are amazing workshops, information tables, and some business to attend. It is my prayer that you are able to come if for no other reason than a handshake, hug or hello!
