Silent Prayer
Jesus’ Sermon on the Plain – Luke 6:20-31 NRSVUE
Then he looked up at his disciples and said: “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. “Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled. “Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.
“Blessed are you when people hate you and when they exclude you, revile you, and defame you on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice on that day and leap for joy, for surely your reward is great in heaven, for that is how their ancestors treated the prophets.
“But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation. “Woe to you who are full now, for you will be hungry. “Woe to you who are laughing now, for you will mourn and weep. “Woe to you when all speak well of you, for that is how their ancestors treated the false prophets.
“But I say to you who are listening: Love your enemies; do good to those who hate you;
bless those who curse you; pray for those who mistreat you. If anyone strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also, and from anyone who takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt. Give to everyone who asks of you, and if anyone takes away what is yours, do not ask for it back again. Do to others as you would have them do to you.

*Introit God of Grace and God of Glory (vs. 1) R. #477
God of grace and God of glory, on your people pour your power; / now fulfill your Church’s story; bring its bud to glorious flower. / Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, for the facing of this hour, / for the facing of this hour.

One: Come, a great cloud of witnesses surrounds us as we gather. Many: May the lingering echo of saints resound in our songs. One: May their stories open a space for the Spirit to enter us anew. Many: In remembering them, may we find ourselves re-membered.One: May the God of every generation form us anew for this generation.
Many: And may a new joy rise in our lives and in the life of the world.

*Hymn I Sing a Song of the Saints of God B. #295 I sing a song of the saints of God, faithful their whole lives through, / who bravely labored, lived, and died for the God they loved and knew. / And one was a doctor, and one was a queen, and another a shepherd in pastures green: / they were saints of God, if you know what I mean. God, help me to be one, too.
They loved their God and they lived that love. It was loving that made them strong. / They did what was right, for Jesus’ sake, lived justly their whole lives long. / And one was a prophet, and one was a priest, and another was slain by a fierce wild beast: / there is no earthly reason, none in the least, why I shouldn’t be one, too.
They lived not only in ages past, there are hundreds of thousands still. / The world is filled with living saints who choose to do God’s will. / You can meet them in school, on the road, or at sea, in church, in a train, in a shop, or at tea: / for the saints are folk like you and like me, and I mean to be one, too.
*Invocation (spoken in unison)
God of every age and time, inspire us today with memories of saints whose energies still linger, hovering around and within as encouragement and strength. Wrap us anew with a felt sense of your persistent presence, granting a new energy to offer You everything of our hearts, minds and souls. Yes, Love of Life, root us and ground us in this. And let it be more than enough for today, as we gather in the name of Jesus. Amen

*Hymn Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound R. #401
Amazing grace! How sweet the sound / that saved and set me free! / I once was lost, but now am found; / was blind, but now I see!
‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, / and grace my fears relieved; / how precious did that grace appear / the hour I first believed!
Through many dangers, toils and snares / I have already come; / ‘tis grace has brought me safe thus far, / and grace will lead me home.
My God has promised good to me, / whose word my hope secures; / God will my shield and portion be / as long as life endures.
When we’ve been there ten thousand years, / bright shining as the sun, / we’ve no less days to sing God’s praise, / than when we’d first begun.

Prayer of Commendation
All: God, in your mercy, hear our prayers. We trust in your never-failing love, joining our beloveds with all the saints in light. Into your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting that for these, and for us, your care is constant and your heart is open; through Jesus Christ, one of the many who lives and reigns with you now and forever. Amen
Prayers of the People – Sharing Joys & Concerns
Our Father (Creator, Mother) who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen
Lead me Lord, lead me in thy righteousness, make my way plain before my face. For it is thou Lord, thou Lord, only, that makest me dwell in safety.
